The guide / 01

What makes a great tattoo shop?

San Diego has plenty of talented tattoo artists. The challenge is finding one whose work fits your idea and whose process makes you comfortable. I tell people to look beyond a single striking photo: study a portfolio, ask how the project will be planned, and pay attention to how the studio treats you.

01

Look at the right work

Find several examples in the style you want. Look closely at linework, composition, color, and consistency. Healed photos are especially useful when an artist has them.

02

Talk through the idea

A consultation should help you cover references, placement, size, budget, timing, and what can realistically work on your body. You should feel heard.

03

Notice the studio

Look for a clean, organized workspace, safe practices, clear aftercare instructions, and a team that takes your questions seriously.

Choose the artist before you choose the date.

Bring a few references, but pay attention to what you like about each one. Is it the movement, the mood, the fine detail, the strong contrast? Find someone who already makes work with those qualities.

For a larger project or cover-up, ask how the design will fit your body and what might need to change to make it work. The right conversation often improves the original idea.

Five questions before you book.

  1. Can I see several tattoos in the style I want, and healed examples if available?
  2. How will the artist approach my idea, placement, and size?
  3. What does the estimate include, and how does the deposit work?
  4. What should I do to prepare for the session?
  5. What aftercare guidance will I get?
A studio to explore / Owner disclosure

Meet Bearcat Tattoo Gallery.

I'm Sierra Colt, and I own Bearcat in San Diego's Little Italy. Our artists have different styles, and we like helping people connect with the person whose work fits their vision.

Because this is my studio, I won't pretend this is an independent “best shops” list. Use the guide to ask better questions wherever you go. If Bearcat feels like a fit, we'd love to hear your idea.

About the author

I'm Sierra Colt.

I've spent 25 years working in tattooing and own Bearcat Tattoo Gallery. I wrote this guide because the best tattoo experiences begin before anyone picks up a machine: with a good match between a person, an idea, and an artist.
